Sigismondo (Sacro romano impero) (Norimberga 1368 – Znaim 1437), imperatore del Sacro romano impero (1411-1437), re dâUngheria (1387-1437) e di Boemia (1419-1437); figlio dellâimperatore Carlo IV. Nel 1385 sposò Maria, figlia ed erede di Luigi I il Grande re di Ungheria e Polonia, e due anni dopo si insediò sul trono dâUngheria. Nel 1396 si pose alla testa di un grande esercito di crociati provenienti da varie parti dâEuropa e intraprese una guerra contro i turchi; questi ultimi, governati dal sultano ottomano Bayazid I, riuscirono però a ottenere la vittoria e inflissero alle truppe di Sigismondo la sconfitta decisiva a Nicopoli, in Bulgaria. Alla morte dellâimperatore Ruperto del Palatinato (1410), Sigismondo fu nominato suo successore; tuttavia non ricevette lâincoronazione ufficiale dal papa fino al 1433.
Nel 1414 persuase lâantipapa Giovanni XXIII a convocare il concilio di Costanza che pose fine allo scisma dâOccidente; durante il concilio, il riformatore religioso boemo Jan Hus venne accusato di eresia e fu condannato a morte e giustiziato. Alla morte del fratello Venceslao (1419), Sigismondo salĂŹ al trono di Boemia, ma la condanna di Jan Hus aveva scatenato violente proteste in Boemia e i sudditi, che lo ritenevano direttamente responsabile della morte del riformatore, insorsero contro il nuovo sovrano impugnando le armi (vedi Guerre hussite). Dopo una serie di sconfitte, Sigismondo venne finalmente riconosciuto come sovrano legittimo nel 1436.
